At the end of this activity, participants will be able to identify the indications for commencing PN, describe the principles of prescribing and monitoring PN, and analyze the appropriate time and principles for transitioning a patient on PN to the home setting.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to define and differentiate between IF and SBS, identify the types of IF based on pathophysiology, and summarize outcomes for IF.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to describe conventional surgical principles in preventing/managing SBS/IF, summarize specialized surgical procedures in SBS/IF, and evaluate outcomes for intestinal lengthening procedures.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to describe the use of growth factors, identify contraindications to use of growth factors, and summarize the results of growth factor therapy in SBS/IF.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to describe the role of medical management of SBS/IF, identify when to use anti-diarrheals in SBS/IF, and determine the appropriateness of using growth factor therapy in overall medical management of SBS/IF.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to monitor patients on long-term PN, evaluate laboratory data of patients receiving long-term PN, and recognize and manage PN complications.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to describe the diet principles that have been successful in the management of SBS/IF, determine when to utilize oral rehydration solutions in SBS/IF, and evaluate the outcomes of dietary management in overall care of SBS/IF.
